Arrival to Los Mochis, welcome and transfer from the airport to the colonial city of El Fuerte.
You will drive through the most fertile agricultural region in northern Mexico to the colonial city of El Fuerte (1.5 hours). El Fuerte was the most important commercial and agricultural center of the vast northwestern region of Mexico. The city is on the El Fuerte River, which was a chief trading center for silver and gold miners from the Urique and Batopilas mines in the nearby Sierra Madre Occidental.
The city was founded in 1564 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Ibarra, the first explorer of the lofty Sierra Madre Occidental. In 2010 El Fuerte was named “Pueblo Magico” (Magical Town) for it many attractions, its beauty, and its small town aura. During your walking tour you will visit the main plaza, the city hall, the museum and historic buildings.
From El Fuerte enjoy the train ride onboard the CHEPE train into the Copper Canyon. This region is also called the “Sierra Tarahumara” home of the Tarahumara Indians. This train ride is one of the top ten great rail journeys of the world with 39 bridges and 86 tunnels. This engineering marvel takes you into the Sierra Madre Occidental, 3000 meters high and offer you a wonderful and a unique experience.
With this program you will enjoy from El Fuerte to Posada Barrancas/Divisadero the most spectacular part of the entire rail journey twice, because you will travel it round way with the Chepe train. You will see deep canyons, a variety of vegetation and some little waterfall along the train ride.
